Appraisal Policy

Archives New Zealand is developing an appraisal policy to establish a framework for assisting all those undertaking an appraisal of records within the New Zealand government context.

The policy includes:

• a definition of appraisal in the New Zealand government context
• an outline of the need for appraisal:
  • in the context of government recordkeeping
  • for the purposes of determining which records become public archives
• the principles of good records appraisal
• a set of collection objectives which articulate Archives New Zealand’s view on what type of records are significant enough to become a public archive.
