Recordkeeping and Emerging Technologies: Trusted Computing and Digital Rights Management

Archives New Zealand invites you to our next government recordkeeping forum where we will discuss emerging technologies, including trusted computing and digital rights management (TC / DRM) and their impacts on recordkeeping. Ever wondered about the long term impact of ICT security innovations on the management and accessibility of records? Our March 2008 recordkeeping forum will address these questions.

Evelyn Wareham will give an update on current developments at Archives New Zealand. Then we will kick off the forum programme with the official transfer of the custodianship of the TC / DRM standards and guidelines to Archives New Zealand.

Trusted computing technology can be embedded in computer hardware to protect information from unauthorised use. Digital rights management (DRM) can regulate whether you can view, print, copy or modify digital information, who can take these actions, and for how long. TC / DRM presents challenges and risks to government in the protection of the integrity of government-held information. Last year, the State Services Commission issued standards and guidelines on how to manage TC / DRM. Archives New Zealand, with its work on other standards, is taking over as custodian for the continued development and communication of the TC / DRM standards.

After the official hand-over, Lindy Siegert, Senior Advisor, E-Government Strategy and Policy, State Services Commission will answer the question — What is TC / DRM anyway? — and tell us about the new standards and how they are expected to be used for information in the state sector. Next John Roberts, Group Manager, Archives Management will discuss how TC / DRM fits in with recordkeeping.

After the break we will hear from Liz Kolster (State Services Commission) about the latest developments in the eGovernment Interoperability Framework (eGIF). To close, Jay Garden from ICT consultancy High Ground will talk about TC / DRM, records and the future of IT security.
