Archives New Zealand's new online finding aid, Archway, was launched in August 2005. It allows researchers, using the internet, to search over 2 million government records from 4000 government agencies, and to identify records that are of interest to them. It replaces the folders of paper-based indexes that visitors to our reading rooms had to use previously. It remains a work in progress, however, as legacy lists and contextual information are progressively moved across, meaning not all lists or items are currently described online.
The Christchurch City Council Archives are currently stored with the Christchurch Office of Archives New Zealand on a contractual basis. These records are not available to be searched on Archway. The same is true for the records in our care from Environment Canterbury and the Banks Peninsula District Council.
It is likely that the Christchurch City Council will be making other arrangements for the storage of, and access to, its archives in the near future. It is advisable that researchers who are planning on visiting Archives New Zealand Christchurch Regional Office with the purpose of examining Christchurch City Council archives contact us first to determine the availability of the records.
