William Wilson to John Hall, Secretary for Public Works, 1864, offering a site for the new Custom House in his proposed subdivision of his original nursery land on the site of the present Bedford Row. Plants from this nursery were used to enhance many public spaces in the city. Both Wilson and Hall were Chairmen of the Municipal Council and 'Cabbage' Wilson became the first Mayor of the City Council in 1868. Sir John Hall became Mayor again in 1906.
