Ko te reo te mauri o te mana Maori
This exhibition looks at the history of the Maori language in New Zealand
from 1840 to 1990. Government policies during this period have had a profound –
and at times detrimental - effect on the welfare of the language. Here, we tell
the story of both the suppression and promotion of te reo Maori, as seen
through the records of government.
A key document in this exhibition is the 1972 petition
calling for the teaching of Maori in schools, which contained over 30,000
signatures and helped to bring about official recognition of the language.
