Wellington office tours | Regional office tours | Self-guided groups | Education resources
Archives New Zealand provides tours and talks for educational, professional and community groups who would like to find out what we do and about the kinds of records we hold.
Our Wellington office usually runs one guided tour a week for groups of up to 40 people. The guided tours are run for year 13 students and adults. Tours can be tailored to suit your particular interest, but we do ask that you provide at least three weeks’ notice, and alternative dates, as bookings can be heavy.
Guided tours take place once a week either on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Friday between 9am and 5pm. Please note we cannot provide guided tours on Thursdays.
Tours are free of charge and take about one hour.
The tour provides:
An overview of Archives New Zealand’s functions and holdings
An introduction to the Constitution Room, which houses some of our nation’s most important documents, including the 1840 Treaty of Waitangi, the Declaration of Independence and the Women’s Suffrage Petition.
An introduction to the finding aids for undertaking research, stacks and reading room services.
To enquire about a tour of the Wellington office please email the Tours Coordinator with details of your proposed visit, including date, time, group name, contact address and telephone number, interests and number of people attending.
To arrange a tour to one of our regional offices please email the relevant regional archivist in:
Groups may visit Archives New Zealand’s Wellington office for a self-guided visit during normal opening times. Self-guided visits are ideal for school groups below Year 13, which are accompanied by their teacher. Information brochures are available for all exhibitions, and there are education resources for the Constitution Room and some of the temporary exhibitions. If you would like to make a self-guided group visit please email the Tours Coordinator with details of your intended date, time and group size, so that we can ensure your visit does not clash with other bookings.
Our education resources are designed for intermediate and secondary school students to use in conjunction with a visit to the Constitution Room and temporary exhibitions. Packs contain posters, brochures, worksheets and information for the teacher.
